This year, Daimler is using a prototype for its truck, in which the truck's self-driving features are shown off. This year, Daimler rolled out full ADAS for new vehicles. If you're going to get a full head-up display, you may want to consider using some of the new Daimler's vehicles for that. There is also the ability to have the truck stop when you turn the steering wheel.
The new system is described on an ADAS presentation blog post by Daimler's general manager, Eric Schmidt:
"A basic head-up display is a way to bring the vehicle's vehicle, and the vehicle's occupants, into a more personal experience. A head-up display is also an integrated feature that provides feedback from the vehicle's occupants. For example, a vehicle equipped with a head-up display can record a vehicle's lane departure times to determine who should get off of a given lane."
In other words, Daimler's truck is going to have a car's head-up display. It's going to be able to tell the driver exactly where to turn. It's going to have a sense of "right turn" that can be used to get directions as quickly as possible. And it's going to also get a sense of what the head-up displays are trying to tell you about the truck.
The new truck, which is expected to hit the market later this year, will be available in the U.S. starting in late November. The new Daimler Cascadia is still on its way, and the company plans to bring the system to more vehicles by the end of 2015.
We'll keep you updated on this story as it develops. In case you missed it, the following is the transcript of the opening portion of The Best of the Week.
MELISSA BLOCK: Well, I'm just a writer. If you want to know how to write a better story then read this story. We're talking about the best of the week.
WALLACE: And the best of the week is for the writers. And I think that's one of my favorite parts about this season of The Best of the Week. It's not just the writers. It's just us. And I think that it's really important to get to know the writers, not just the writers, but the writers themselves. So from what I saw from the first episode, it is a really hard thing to do
