The three were killed on the outskirts of the city on Friday, after the attack by six suicide bombers in the southwestern town of Lampedusa.

The men were reportedly at a bar in Nice's historic district, the official told AFP.

They had come to the bar to "confuse" a man, who had gone to meet a friend and the pair were carrying out a "calm down" gesture before launching the attack.

Police have said that the men were planning suicide bombings on "the basis of a number of jihadist or jihadist ideology," as well as "other indications" of a plot that may have involved ISIS.

The attacks in Nice, a large tourist destination, came as a wave of migrants from western Europe poured into the country to try to reach Europe's shores.

The migrants, many wearing the black or red dress of a migrant, arrived at the city's central station on Saturday morning and carried out suicide bombings in dozens of different places across the country.

The attackers were reportedly trying to enter Nice by train or bus, the official said.

Security forces, police and air force personnel battled ISIS fighters for control of the city, which is under the control of French, Italian, German and Spanish coalition forces, many of them from the European Union.

A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the attacks were a "premeditated and self-inflicted" attack.

"There have been few injuries so far. One of the suicide bombers was killed and three others injured," the official added.
