The Environmental Protection Agency is a major player in the mercury market. In 2014, the agency had an estimated $9 billion worth of mercury-related fines issued by the US federal government, with $1.5 trillion going to the EPA. However, the EPA has been criticized for its handling of the mercury issue, which has resulted in a slew of lawsuits against the utility in the past year.

The EPA itself has been criticized for its handling of mercury (it was the first agency to issue a law in the US that required it to enforce a law at all).

Despite these complaints, the president continued to push for mercury-related regulations.

Environmentalists are hopeful that the EPA's efforts will help him push for the mercury standard in some way.

"There's probably a chance he'll get a legislative victory when it comes to the mercury standard in the Senate," said former Pennsylvania senator Ron Wyden in 2015. "In the Senate, it would be difficult for the Republicans to pass a bill that would kill the mercury rule. We're getting a lot of attention because of this. But this is a huge victory for environmental activists and the public health."

This is a good day for all of us at The Clean Air Institute to stand up and say that the mercury rule is a good idea, and that we'll be in for a hard fought fight next year.
