The documentary, which is now available in three languages, offers Miyazaki some important insight into his life and work. The basic approach, however, is to use his own work as a guide: by focusing on small details like the movement of a caterpillar, that helps give the film an extra dimension to its focus, he gives us the necessary context for how things worked in the early days of animation, and that gives us a more precise understanding of how Miyazaki works with technology.
His most recent film, Never-Ending Man , was based on this more traditional view. Unlike his previous two, it was not about an animator but rather about an individual, a man whom the film describes as "not as much of a man as he seems." Miyazaki felt this was an important way to show the power and influence of technology in his work, the way he uses it to show the power of his art to people around him.
"It's not about me saying 'No, this is the most powerful machine in the world.'"
Miyazaki's focus on the individual, Miyazaki said, was the only one of its kind. "It's not about me saying 'No, this is the most powerful machine in the world.' It's just about me saying, 'This is the most powerful machine, that has brought me to this place.' It's not about me saying 'No, this is the most powerful machine in the world, but it's the most powerful machine in the world.'"
And that's pretty much how he describes the man who once made animation his profession.
"The most important thing for me was to keep a sense of my own self, and in doing that I gave myself some space," he said. "I really have given up trying to do what I was doing. It's not going to ever get better."
The most important thing for Miyazaki was to keep a sense of his own self, and in doing that he gave himself some space. He said his own self has always been very quiet, but it had never stopped him from drawing things. And even today it's hard not to find him with a bit of a smile on his face.A man is facing charges after allegedly setting off an explosive device near his family's car during a Christmas morning drive.
