Kroll had been living in the West Village during a brief life of heroin addiction. He was out of work on September 11 when a friend called him by name on his cell phone. Kroll said a friend had pulled up at the apartment and offered to give him a ride to the store. Kroll allegedly said he was waiting for a friend. He then claimed the other man had followed him. The man allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Kroll.
A New York police source told the Post that there was no indication at the time that his death was linked to narcotics. Instead, the suspect was being held for questioning.
The New York Times reports that Kroll was found hanging in his apartment in his 20s. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kroll was widely known in the game industry for his game trivia. He was a well-known judge, producer, actor, and designer. He started his career as a game designer in 1982. He was the lead programmer on the game Trivia's first game, Turok.
More than 20 years later, Kroll created a huge variety of games including the world's first game, the game in which he played as the villain (and his pet dog) P.W.
The game has since been sold over 7 million copies as of November 2, 2012.
