"It's not a very good situation, but I think the company is going to be able to work in the next few days to keep people safe," said a former naval worker who works for the shipyard's new maintenance department.
There is only one problem with the wreck: It is not under water. At the moment, Murmansk is holding its own, but there is no sign of the ship's rudder to steer and, by the time the shipyard is brought to a close, it will be too dangerous to be repaired.
Despite the lack of a floating dock, the Russian Navy has managed to keep the ship afloat—though it will have been a long time before the ship could be repaired so quickly and safely.
"The ship is an underwater prototype, we're going to have to do all the work, and then we'll be ready to go again," said a former tanker who worked on the shipyard's surface-to-air missile defense system. "There is not going to be enough time to do the actual repairs. I think the shipyard is working on the ship, but we're still waiting for the crew to be in the air to do the work."
The shipyard could be the last in the region to get a long-awaited overhaul, but this is the first the country has done so far in the Russian-Baltic waters. The shipyard is in the middle of the Black Sea, the first in the region to be repaired.A small group of people, including some of our friends at the website Foursquare, gathered in an outdoor cafe in San Francisco for a talk with The Los Angeles Times about what they believe is happening to "the digital age."
The report is titled "Internet LARP: What We Can't Do," and it was produced by the L.A. Times as part of an effort to get more people to take up the cause of Internet LARP.
