"It is time for the American people to finally have a full understanding of this tragic shooting event and what exactly it meant to us," Norton said. "This is a tragic senseless loss. The victims were unarmed and they had no safety net. Our nation needs to stand with the families of those killed while our government seeks to prosecute those who commit heinous crimes like these."
"The American people must continue to stand together to protect, protect and protect our government and its citizens," Beyer said. "All of us must stand with them. It is not enough to just stand with the families of those killed. We must stand with the people of that nation who are still trying to determine the truth of the case. The bill also calls for a federal grand jury investigation of Ghaisar and his family. The grand jury will be required to meet in person or by telephone to determine whether the grand jury's findings are in keeping with the Constitutionality of the law.
According to WFAA, the grand jury will include a federal grand jury commissioner and will take five months to process. The grand jury's final decision on whether to indict the five officers involved in the shooting is set in July.
"The Department of Justice has consistently refused to provide the public with the same information that the public needs to fully understand what happened in Charlottesville," Norton said. "This bill will ensure they do not receive the same information that they deserve."
"Today's tragic shooting has been a sad day for Virginia and the national community as we mourn this loss and honor the courage of thousands of Americans who died last week. As Congress mourns the loss of our brave citizens, we want to send a powerful message to the White House and the Department of Justice that those who have caused this tragedy will not be silenced. We will not stand with the family of those killed and let law enforcement hold accountable those who commit these atrocious acts."
