As a result, the Army and the private sector have stepped up their support for the Sikorsky Black Hawk and its variants, and have begun to buy out the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk and its variants, which have been the backbone of the US Army's helicopter force for decades. Designed during the Army's last major helicopter procurement push in the 1980s, the Black Hawk now flies in some form in all of the military services. But its range and speed have become limiting factors in the Army's airborne assault operations. And to add to the problem, the Army lacks a scout helicopter that meets the demands of deployment overseas.

The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk and its many variants have been the backbone of the US Army's helicopter force for decades. But its range and speed have become limiting factors in the Army's airborne assault operations. And to add to the problem, the Army lacks a scout helicopter that meets the demands of deployment overseas.

With its twin-engine, twin-stroke engines, the Black Hawk takes on the weight of a medium aircraft, but more importantly an engine. The UH-60 Black Hawk uses a 5.5-liter, 740 hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine with a peak torque rating of 6,842 lb-ft.

The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk and its variants are equipped with a 5.5-liter, 740 hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine with a peak torque rating of 6,842 lb-ft. The Black Hawk also features a twin-turbocharged, 5.3-liter, 790 hp engine with a peak torque rating of 6,845 lb-ft.

In a country where more than half of all U.S. military personnel are women and with more than a third of military aircraft at their disposal, it's a remarkable feat to have those two engines in our air force. But for a helicopter that's so much more, and so much more, it's a shame that the Army doesn't have a full fleet of UH-60 Black Hawk variants.
