“And then the next day,” he went for it again.
“And then the next day,” he went for it again. And again, she says, he went for it again, and again, and again, and again."
“The study also found Cantsbee's vocal cords were not as good as his vocal cords of a typical gorilla, which indicates he may have been using his vocal cords to communicate with the human child.
The researchers said they can't say when he started getting aggressive, because Cantsbee was never aggressive towards the babies, at least not at first.
“When he was a young, he told Rose that he would always go after her if she didn't leave him alone.
But Cantsbee's behavior was "slightly different from that of an average gorilla"—and he would not say something like that again at his regular visits to the area or at the gorilla shelter he was at (presumably because he didn't want to be in the same area as Rose).“
And then Cantsbee was getting angry—and he went after Rose, but his behavior was all the same, she says.
“And then he began getting violent.
"He was yelling and trying to run at me—but I didn't come close enough to strike him," she says. “He was trying to run towards me, and she noticed that he had a pair of teeth on his head.
"I got scared," says Rose because she and her husband had been at the zoo together.
And when she was done talking to him, she says he grabbed her arm and slapped her, pulling her to the ground and dragging her down the street.
“Cantsbee and his wife were arrested for assault, according to police, but the gorilla was still in the enclosure when police arrived.
“He was held at the local jail for four days under the Animal Control Act.
“He was eventually released in March, says Rose.
"He has had to move on," she says. "He's had to live with his whole family since he was born."
As for the other two gorillas who were arrested, their cases may have been different. But their cases have also been very different from that of Cantsbee.
“Cantsbee was arrested in October, says Rose.
