According to the New York Times, the Democratic Party was already at work on a new ad campaign to defeat incumbent Democrat Bill Weld in 2016. The ad includes a call for a recount of the election results. It also uses the name of the independent Republican, Robert Steele, and a photograph of a Republican operative and a photo of an aide. That ad was run by the Republican Party, and the RNC did not respond to a request for comment after a report of the ad surfaced.

In Maine, the party's campaign manager, Scott McDaniel, told Politico that he was a paid consultant to Democrat Gary Johnson, who had won the state Republican primary. That consultant had also been paid $75,000 by the Republican National Committee, which also funded the campaign. The Republican National Committee was also told about the ad, McDaniel said. McDaniel was forced to resign after the Maine Democratic Party hired former state Sen. Chris McDaniel as its campaign manager. McDaniel's resignation was confirmed on the state party's website. The two other Republican Party officials who were paid for the ad were not involved in the state party's campaign for 2016.

This was a major political scandal for the Republican Party, which had been hoping to secure a large chunk of the vote, but faced significant setbacks from within the party, who could not hold on to enough of their own voters in the state, and from within their party's own base.

The Republican Party, along with their allies in the media, were also concerned that a large portion of their base would be against Donald Trump in November.

The Trump campaign has tried to downplay the fact that the party is supporting the anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim candidate.

Many believe the Democrats are being paid to do so, but many of them are not. In November, the Democratic National Committee hired John Podesta, a former Clinton campaign chairman and Clinton campaign chairman, as an ad manager. Podesta's work for the Democratic National Committee, which has received $7.4 million in political contributions from the party, came from the same firm that hired a former Wall Street Journal executive. The New York Times reported earlier this year that Clinton aides were paid to work on the 2016 candidate's behalf, as well as to raise money for him from outside entities.
