While Baxter's arms or torso might be relatively simple to program, its movements often require precision (see video below). In fact, many of Baxter's movements are just like the robotic arms of most other robots, including the ones we've seen. There's no way we could program this to work properly.

The company was founded in 2002 by a team of researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Michigan, who came up with a concept that mimicked the movements of the human hands and feet and had their designs developed and tested around the same time. Baxter uses the same technology as its competitors; it's a simple robot that can quickly and easily teach tasks without having to use human hands or feet.

Baxter's new technology, dubbed "Baxter Rethink Robotics, is intended to make it possible for robots to be designed so that they can work collaboratively, rather than just as a means of creating complex robots," the company's new press release reads. "Our technology has the potential to dramatically reduce manufacturing costs and to save the U.S. economy countless millions of dollars annually, while helping consumers save millions of dollars."

The company also plans to provide new "tasks" and "tools" to improve Baxter's interaction. These will be "tool-like" tools that can be used to interact directly with the robot, and will also be made from a lightweight titanium alloy that is more durable than the rigid material used to train the robot in these tasks.

As for the future of the company, the company has yet to say, and will likely announce more in the near future.
