To get to a particular organism in the ecosystem, they
To get to a particular organism in the ecosystem, they would need to know the molecular structure of its genome, which was then determined by the mass spectrometry (MTA) technique, and then they would need to analyze the DNA of other organisms in the ecosystem. In the case of dinosaurs, for example, the molars of our cousins to dinosaurs were found to have a relatively low density of DNA (1:1) compared to mammalian ones (1:1). But this might not be just a bad thing. If we're looking for a specific molecule to be present in any particular organism, we need to know how that molecule fits into a sequence of proteins. As noted above, a chemical structure known as "complex information"—the molecular structure in our genome of DNA—is extremely important because it can be used to predict the exact location of an organism's genes, and to predict the specific genetic characteristics of an organism's offspring.
"We're looking for that complex information that is in the right place to tell us where the cell should be in the genome," Cullen said. "It's not just a matter of what proteins the cell has that it's going to do. The more complex information we can use for that, the easier it is to interpret."
The team also used modern-day methods to look for any mutations that might be involved in the presence of these proteins. In this case, they found that when there was a small mutation, the protein would still be present, but at a much greater rate than the mutation that caused the mutation.
"We are really hoping to be able to map out where all of these proteins are that we can be able to map out where these proteins come from, and how they interact with our cells," Cullen said. "We're still working on understanding how the proteins interact with each other and how they interact with other proteins."
As with all of science, the scientists need to understand the evolutionary history of their organisms. But it's important to remember that in many areas of life, there is a high degree of variability, and there is also a high degree of variability in the level and frequency at which proteins are found. The researchers focused on three areas of study that the team found most interesting: the genetic code of the dinosaurs, the diet of the dinosaurs and the life history of the dinosaurs.
