The advantages of Outpost's "edge computing" approach are that customers will be able to use the same tools they already have, and with them, Amazon will be able to manage the entire system without having to deal with any central servers or other software. In a recent interview, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos described the advantages of outposts, saying: "You are able to run all of the different services you need to run on a high-performance, high-capacity datacenter. And you can use that in any sort of data center. So you can't just run all of the different services you need to run on this data center. You need to run all of the different services and you have to do that in-house.
"And that's just the way it is—the way it is with AWS. So we're really excited about outposts. We think there will not be a point where we have to deal with a bunch of different services. We can do all that. We would love to run all those services. We would love to do all that. And that will be very exciting for people."
Even though Outpost won't work on the cloud, it's not like you can't install it on the servers in your own data center in another year. It's actually possible to move in and get out of the data center.
In November, Amazon announced it was partnering with Amazon Kubernetes for an on-premises, virtual-cloud service called AWS-ESP. That service will run on Amazon's own data centers, but is being developed within Amazon's own data centers. The AWS-ESP service, which will offer customers a range of cloud services, is being tested in a virtual-cloud environment that will provide an added layer of security for AWS and Amazon Web Services. This service will also provide the ability to access, set up and manage external storage, support for cloud-based virtual machines and servers and use AWS's Hyper-V virtualization infrastructure (the cloud's storage pool).
Amazon Kubernetes is a virtualization solution designed to be used as part of a virtual-cloud. The company will be working with customers and partners to develop a virtual-cloud service that would be able to support the AWS and Amazon Web Services environments.
While there are already some cloud solutions for Amazon, such as Azure, the service could be used on the data centers of other companies. Amazon has also offered a service called AWS-EK, which is a cloud solution for
