In the meantime, the team developed a new, more efficient prototype for the upcoming Robocar. The prototype has a 3-D printing of a car's front and rear wheels, a small 3D printer, and a driverless interface, although it's unclear if this will be used for the production of the Robocar. If the final assembly of the car is successful, it will go into production in 2016, which is a while away. At the same time, Rod Chong, Roborace's CEO, said that while a lot of people are aware of robots of similar type, they aren't going to start using them at the moment. "We're not interested in the type of robot we're building. There's a lot of people who are going to be using Robors [Robots on an Autopilot] that are very advanced, and they are going to be very similar in their design to the robots we're building. Even if we're able to build two Robors, we still want to build one for each customer," Rod Chong said.
This is obviously a bit of a departure on the part of Roborace, but it is a clear indication that the team is committed to the goal of making them as advanced as possible.
The Robors are certainly not the same.
Roborace's Robocar, however, is not only the first, but arguably the most advanced. It has been designed and built using only a 3D printer, a system known as a 'CBD (Computer Controlled Self-Driving Car)'. The system is designed to allow a driver to take control of a self-driving car through a computerized interface that allows the car to drive autonomously.
The software has been designed to detect and react to a car's environment, or use the system to predict when a particular car is going to overtake. If something happens that allows the car to react, the system will be able to warn the driver. If it decides to drive in a certain direction, the system will be able to find a certain spot and make a decision based on the car's safety profile. Roborace currently is not a commercial vehicle, but rather is considered a 'sales platform' for a very competitive industry, and its technology is already being used in certain parts of the world where it's possible to create autonomous cars—like in Korea. While Roborace is not an industry-leading company, it's worth noting that their own Robocars are not as advanced
