TORONTO -- A Toronto fire chief said Tuesday he's seen the fire department's decision to suspend a firefighter's job after firefighters used inappropriate fire extinguishers to clear a wildfire.
Randy Sorensen said he was shocked by the decision made by Ontario Provincial Police to suspend the firefighter's job.
"The firefighters used the fire extinguisher for about 10 minutes. I don't know how it came to that," said Sorensen, who's been with the fire department for 26 years.
Fire Chief James Moore said the fire department decided that, after a week of internal debate and in the aftermath of a deadly blaze in the city's downtown, the fire department's decision to suspend the firefighter's job was not final.
"We've talked about we're going to go for another one in one of the next two weeks," Moore said.
"I'm not sure how they'd do that, but the decision was made. It's not a decision that's going to go away."
The fire chief said the decision came after a week-long discussion with firefighters, who were concerned about a fire in the city.
"I was really concerned about the fire department and other elements of the fire department. They felt that we should be looking at fire safety."

He said his company had been involved in several cases and was working closely with the firefighters' union to resolve the matter.
"The decision was made to do what's right for firefighters, to remove the fire department from the fire department in the event that we find out about any other issue that might arise, or if there is something else that would be more in the best interest of the fire department, we would look at it carefully," Moore said.

The fire chief said firefighters' unions had been involved in numerous cases and were working closely with the firefighters' union to resolve the issue.
"We didn't have any other issue that would have any affect with the fire department. They do have an issue with that, and we have to have that right of removal," Moore said.
